TSOP The Sound Of Philadelphia

The Philly Sound was the pre-cursor to the disco boom that hit both the UK and USA during the 1970s and 1980s, the sound dominated nightclub sets and saw many dance floor hits by soul acts including The O Jays [Love train] Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes [Satisfaction guaranteed] Three Degrees [Year of Decision]. The initial driving force was Philadelphia International Records which released hundreds of now classic Philly sound tracks.
The Sound Of Philadelphia songwriters and producers included Thom Bell, Linda Creed, Norman Harris, Dexter Wansel and the production teams of Gene McFadden / John Whitehead, Kenny Gamble / Leon Huff who worked with a stable of studio musicians to develop the unique Philadelphia sound. Many of these musicians would record as the instrumental group MFSB, which hit with the classic tune "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" in 1974. Other notable musicians included bassist Ronald Baker, guitarist Norman Harris and drummer/Trammps baritone Earl Young, (B-H-Y) who also recorded as the Trammps [Disco Inferno]. These three were the rhythm section for MFSB and branched off into a sub-label of Philadelphia International, called Golden Fleece, after which Harris created the Gold Mind label, in conjunction with SalSoul another key Philadelphia music record label. Gold Mind's roster included First Choice, Loleatta Holloway, and Love Committee (all of whom would feature Baker/Harris/Young productions of their material).
